How are you touched by transplantation?
I am a Recipient
What is your city / state and country of residence?
NY
If you are a recipient, what type of transplant did you receive?
Liver, Double Lung
Recipients: In this space, feel free to list those you are grateful to for receiving the Gift of LIfe:
I had a double lung and liver transplant. First one performed at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio! I absolutely love my donor and their family for making the decision to donate and it would not have happened without my CF team and lung and liver team. They are some amazing groups of people!!
If you are a recipient, what type of donor did you receive your Gift of Life from?
Deceased Donor
If you are a recipient, when did you have your transplant(s)?
January 31, 2007
What is your principal transplant med(s)?
Prednisone, Bactrim, and Prograf. I take a lot more but those are the ones specifically for the transplant.
What is your hospital and, or doctor's name, city / state and country?
Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Budev and Dr. Mehta are my main lung doctors. I see whomever is available for the liver team.
What do you do for a living?
I used to be a secretary at a place called The House of the Good Shepard. They house children who have been abused, are in trouble, or who's parents terminated their parental rights. I quit that job in 2006 after my son was born and then was waiting for the transplants. I now just stay at home with my son.
About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when I was just 6 months old and have had lung and GI issues all of my life. I started getting sicker in high school and college but I didn't let that stop me. Soon, I started having frequent episodes of coughing up blood and more infections and my CF doctor told me that it was time to look into transplants for my lungs and liver. This was in the end of 2004. I found the Cleveland Clinic, they accepted my case although they weren't sure about doing both lungs and liver at the same time. I had my first evaluations there in June 2005, more in July, and then they came to a hault when I found out that I was pregnant. I was told to terminate the pregnancy because it would hold off the transplants and I couldn't do it.

My son was born 7 weeks early in January 2006 and he was perfectly healthy. I started with the evaluations again and was listed in August 2006 with my lung function in the 30% range. I ended up in the hospital from September to December waiting for the transplants and when I didn't get them, was sent home for the holidays and my son's first b-day. I went right back into the hospital on January 22 due to coughing up a lot of blood...most I had ever coughed up. I had two embolizations to stop the bleeding and then was air lifted back to Cleveland. My lung function was now 15% and still dropping. Dr. Budev did everything that she could to get me higher on the list and even talked about not doing the liver transplant so we could get the lungs faster.

On January 30, 2007 Dr. Budev came into my room and told me that we got all three organs and the surgery would be that night. It was a rush for my family to get there in a horrible snow storm and my husband made it an hour before I went into surgery. I came out of surgery with a whole new life on January 31, 2007 at 6:30AM.

My recovery was rather quick and and was out of the hospital in 12 days and home 2 1/2 weeks after that. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would do it all again if I had to.

The Gift of Life

We, in the transplant community, want to make more people aware of organ donation and the different types of ways that you can be an organ donor. Please read the following message that a lot of friends on transplantbuddies.org and I (Patti) put together...... If a stranger was hurt in an auto accident, was choking in a local restaurant, drowning, etc., would you try to save them? How about if it was a family member who needed a live donor? If you could give back a life, would you? If you answer… Continue

I'm doing okay! I have testing at Mass Gen tomorrow, so, getting closer to actually listing with them. I only have to do some tomorrow, and a nutritionist in July, since I already did so much with Brigham & Women's. How was Washington? I assume it was the state?

Thanks, glad I could be a part in that connection. Glad you liked my story but I feel it pales in comparison with some of the others I have read. I have to say I have had it pretty easy.

Yes, it is Mass General in Boston. I went through the whole evaluation at Brigham & Women's, only to be told at the end they'd decided I definitely needed a liver, and they didn't have a liver transplant team. Then I was going to go to Boston Children's (they were willing to see me since they saw me when I was first diagnosed with liver disease and my hospital didn't know what the heck to do with me), but they don't take Medicare (?!). So then it was on to Mass General. The two teams are supposed to meet in a week or two to discuss me. I'm really glad to hear that Cleveland took your case! So far I've only heard about Pittsburgh doing these kinds of transplants. Did you have to move to Cleveland before, or just after? Did you get life-flighted there? Feel free to email me instead, as I might get long winded. dearstars@gmail.com
