Gave the Gift of Life as a Living Donor
I am a living donor who donated...
A kidney
Recipients: In this space, feel free to list those you are grateful to for receiving the Gift of LIfe:
I also want to expand on my transplant experience. I donated my kidney to my baby. He was 1 1/2 when I donated, since he is far too young to host his own site I feel the need to expand on his journey. Exactly 3 weeks after his transplant he went into acute rejection rendering his graft a "loss". Dominik went back on hemodialysis and on the transplant list this time. Our search began as Dom built up a multitude of antibodies leaving him compatible with only 3% of the U.S. population. My the glory of Gods grace a young women from Souther California came forward and was tested as a donor match--she was Dom's perfect match and ultimate HERO. Dominik was retransplanted on May 21, 2008, nearly 1 yr after I donated my kidney to him. So I consider myself a "donor" and a "recipient" on Dominik's behalf. He is now 3 yrs old and is doing beautifuly. Amen...
If you are a recipient, what type of donor did you receive your Gift of Life from?
Living Donor
If you are a recipient, when did you have your transplant(s)?
Dom was transplanted at the University of Minnesota Childrens Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
What is your principal transplant med(s)?
Dom primary tplant meds are prograf, imuran and prednisone.
What is your hospital and, or doctor's name, city / state and country?
U of M-Fairview-Childrens Hospital. Nephrologist is Dr. Blanche Chavers and surgeon is Dr. Humar.
If you are on the transplant waiting list, when were you listed?
May 25, 2007
What do you do for a living?
Dominik and I have taken on a new mission in life-to pay it forward and bring awareness about organ, blood and bone marrow transplants. I am an R.N by trade.
About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
Dominik's entered this world 3 months too early on June 3rd 2005. His life was fragile and we knew knew immediately that he was going to have a difficult life but he showed us that he is a fighter. Dominik was dx with dysplastic kidneys leaving him with 12% kidney function. By the grace of God-Dom thrived and as soon as he reached 20 lbs in Feb-2007 he was a candidate for a kidney transplant. I, his mom, was worked up and in April of 2007 we proceed with his transplant. Dom never tolerated his Cyclosporine and 3 weeks after the t-plant he developed HUS which lead into acute rejection. Exactly 1 month later my kidney was removed from his beautiful little boy. Once again our hopes were shattered and we were worse off then before as Dom was now living without any kidneys. This meant hemodialysis 5 days a week. The closest ped's dialysis was 225 miles from "home" so Dom and I lived at the Ronald McDonald house near the hospital. This journey has taught us so much--there are some truly loving people in our world and we are so blessed to have met Mary Cousineau as she saved Dom's life with her living kidney donation.

Dominik has been on several media broadcasts--last one was World News Tonight with Charles Gibson. Look forward to raising awareness and educating the Country with our journey.
